Learn something new every week: Sleep is amazing

Sleep is amazing.  Seriously though, who doesn't know that.  We all know that.  But sometimes we are reminded of that, like when we don't get any.  My son is 6 months old today!  That went super fast.  BUT - the six months of being able to count on one hand the number of times I have slept "through the night" has not gone by quickly.  Let's not forget about pregnancy - so add a that final trimester onto the tally of months without sleep and it gets pretty rough.

I haven't posted much lately on this blog, or my family blog, because this Mama has not been getting much sleep.  I am one of those people that needs 8 hours.  Little Man has been waking every 2-3 hours, sometimes every hour, during the night and of course hasn't settled into a nap schedule during the day.  If I held him all day he would be golden, but that isn't possible.  Then pile on an almost 3 year old that is iffy with the naps and a husband that is in school at night and that makes for some looooooooooooong days.

Anywho - sleep is amazing.  And I have gotten some the past two nights.  Hence, my catching up on posts.  Last night my son only woke up once.  ONCE!  He also took two good length naps yesterday.  Sleep begets sleep.  So true.  Heck, I nursed him again when he woke up at 6am (I guess that was his second waking, but that is usually when he gets up) and he is snoozing again.  I was able to get a (kinda) restful nights sleep, get to the gym for a 5am class (yes, I am a glutton for punishment), get home before hubby needed to leave for work, cuddle and nurse with Little Man and BAM - get these posts done.  All before 8am. THAT, my friends, is what sleep can do for you.

Sleep is amazing.

Learn something new every week: Paelo awesomeness

It is hard to pick the best things I learned this week, but here goes.

We've gone paleo.  We are trying it for a month and seeing how we feel.  I'll be honest though, once you do it, I don't know that you can ever go back.......

I've learned two amazing paleo recipes that I want to share with you.  Seriously life changing stuff here.  Life changing in that even my two year old eats them no problemo.

First off is paleo pancakes.  Eggs, bananas, almond butter, voila.  Yup, that's it.  The almond butter is even optional.  Okay, I'll make it a little more formal.

Easy Paleo Pancakes

2 Bananas
2 Eggs
1 spoonful of almond butter (optional)

Mash up the bananas, add the eggs and almond butter.  Stir up.
Melt coconut oil (or butter if you're not doing paleo) in a pan and cook these like regular pancakes.  Only difference is you won't be looking for "bubbles" like regular pancakes, just keep checking them for the right consistency to successfully flip.  This will feed 2- 3 people.

There you have it.  Kids eat them right up.  Want a little something special?
Drizzle some honey on top.

Next up, Cauliflower Rice!

Rice is not on the paleo plate, but this is an awesome replacement.

Cauliflower Rice

1 head of cauliflower
Garlic
Olive Oil
Sea Salt

Cut off cauliflower florets, microwave for 4 minutes.  Put the cauliflower through a processor or blender.  Saute some garlic in olive oil and add the cauliflower.  Saute for about 7-8 minutes.  Add sea salt.
Serve like rice!  Feeds 3-4.

Really, how much cooler could these get?!

Also, did you know Brussels Sprouts came like this?

I had no idea....

Learn something new every week: how to put on a scarf

I really do learn something new at least once a week!  Maybe I'm naive, sheltered or just very much out of "trendy" pop culture stuff, but I get kind of excited when I learn new things and wanted to share them with you!

I got my hair cut this week.  Like, REALLY cut.

I went from this

To this

See, lots of cutting.  I donated my hair, so I had to get rid of at least 10 inches.  This is the shortest I've ever had it and has left my neck surprisingly exposed to the cold.

What does this have to do with learning something new?  Well, I saw the coolest way to wear a scarf the other day and my neck is now requiring one when I go out!  Forgive me if you already knew this, but I was in awe when I saw how a teenage girl put her scarf on while leaving church.  I've always been a traditional "put it behind your neck and toss each end over your shoulders" gal - but not any longer.

Here is my new way of putting on a scarf!

Fold your scarf in half.  I prefer to use a longer scarf when putting it on this way.  My Grandmother made this for me years ago and it is the perfect length for this.

Now pick it up and put it behind your neck.

Now thread the ends on one side through the loop on the other side.

Adjust it up, like a tie.

Voila!  How cool is that.

So, that is what I learned this week!  And yes, as my husband pointed out, I'm aware I just put a slip knot around my neck.  I will be extra cautious to make sure the ends don't get caught in anything.  Perhaps also good to remember you don't want a super long scarf for this method....
